Overview

Finsage is a mobile app that empowers young adults in Germany to improve their financial literacy while building healthy savings habits. The app combines bite-sized financial education with flexible savings tools designed to motivate users to reach their financial goals.

The project was undertaken to address the growing need for simple and engaging financial education for young users, while providing a unique incentive-driven savings system.

Problem

Many young adults in Germany (ages 16-25) struggle with financial independence due to a lack of practical education and tools tailored to their needs. Current financial apps are either too complex or fail to address their specific goals, making it hard to manage savings and learn essential financial concepts.

These are the challenges I intend to tackle with this app:

  1. Lack on Financial Education: Young adults struggle with limited knowledge and confusion about managing personal finances effectively.
  2. Difficulty Setting Savings Goals: Users find it hard to set and track savings goals in a simple and engaging manner.
  3. Limited Tools for Financial Independence: There's a lack of accessible tools tailored to help young users navigate financial independence.

Research Summary

I conducted in-depth research to understand the needs and pain points of the target audience. The full details of this research, including visuals, are included here:

  1. User Personas: 3 Personas to represent different financial goals and challenges among 16-25-year-olds.
  2. Competitor Analysis: Evaluated existing apps (Finanzguru, N26, Numbrs & Finanzfluss) on key features, strengths, weaknesses and unique value proposition.
  3. Information Architecture & MoSCoW: Outlined the core structure and prioritized features for the MVP.
  4. User Journey Maps: Mapped out each persona’s journey from onboarding to achieving savings goals.

Definition of Objectives

  1. Promote Financial Literacy: Offer micro-learning modules to simplify financial education and help users understand key concepts.
  2. Simplify Savings: Allow users to create, manage, and track savings goals with a focus on ease of use and flexibility.
  3. Incentivize Saving: Motivate users by offering interest rewards tied to completing savings goals.
  4. Community Learning:: Enable users to engage in discussions within lessons to exchange knowledge and get answers.

Design

Simplified the app into two core areas:

  1. Education Hub: Offer micro-learning modules to simplify financial education and help users understand key concepts.
  2. Savings Goals: Visual tracking of multiple savings goals.

User Flow

Created and refined key user flows to facilitate seamless navigation between the learning and savings features.

Wireframes

The wireframes emphasize the layout, structure, and visual elements of the design, intentionally omitting specific text or detailed content to focus on overall functionality.

Here are some selected wireframes:

Low Fidelity Frames Savings
Low Fidelity Frames Education

High-Fidelity Design

Integrated visual elements such as colors, typography, and imagery into the wireframes to create a polished prototype that accurately reflects the brand identity and user interface.

Here are some selected designs:

HiFi Frames Savings Overview, New Goal and Specific Savings Goal
HiFi Frames Education Overview, Specific Course, Course Video with Transcript, Course Video with Attachments for download and Course Discussion Forum

Conclusion

Finsage reinforced the power of simplicity in financial design—users don’t just need data; they need clarity and confidence. I learned how small design choices, like phrasing, color psychology, and progressive disclosure, can make financial management feel approachable rather than overwhelming.

This project also highlighted the importance of iteration. What seemed intuitive at first often needed refinement, and real user feedback was invaluable in shaping a more seamless experience. Ultimately, Finsage reminded me that great UX isn’t just about usability—it’s about empowering users to make better decisions with ease.
